Discuss what goes into implementing process improvement in order to obtain efficiencies. Provide an example of a company that needs to improve its operations so you the customer benefit from more efficiencies.
Proper implementation of process improvement can lead to efficiencies for a business. A business usually has three kinds of processes – operational processes, management processes and supporting processes. Operational processes include the core business, management process includes processes like corporate governance etc. and supporting processes includes processes that support other processes like technical support etc. To ensure that efficiencies are obtained from implementing process improvement start with asking what needs to be changed. Thus the problem has to be identified before it can be fixed. Then analyze what is happening and how to improve it in a realistic manner. After this is done the improvement process will have to be designed. Designing of the improvement process will entail determining the steps that are creating roadblocks, the aspects that are most time consuming and any undue increase in costs and resources. All the processes must have associated procedures and roles and responsibilities for each process and procedure should be well defined. Lastly process and procedure training should be made a regular aspect so as to ensure efficiency on a sustainable basis.
An example of a company that needs to improve its operations is ‘Subway’. Subway is an American privately held restaurant franchise. The company needs to improve its operations at the franchise level so as to ensure that customers are served quickly and the customers do not have to stand for long in queues when placing orders for their meals. The company should determine the steps that are creating roadblocks and the aspects that are most time consuming. It should then design a process improvement framework considering the existing scenario and the needs of the customers.
