To begin with discussion on how management differs from leadership, it is important to understand the basic meaning of both terminologies. Both are essential part of organization success and individual success. Leadership is component of management. Now when we talk about leadership, it simply means influencing other/teams or groups to achieve a defined goal or objective. But management on other hand involves selecting teams, defining work and having control over team members to work for achieve organizational goal. It usually involves giving directions, which team members has to follow.

Now lets lay down some major differences between both terms :
1) A person become a manager by his high moral standard behaviour where as leaders are formed by personal attributes
2) Managers defines layout of department, assigns work to team members and also provide responsibilities to team persons in order to do their tasks where as leaders inspire team members to achieve the organization goals
3) Managers are decided by the organization core committee where as leaders are formed by beliefs of his followers
4) Under management, managers follow the organization rules and policies where as in leadership leaders follow their own instincts and beliefs
5) Management focuses on people by their present and past performance while leadership keeps an eye on potential an individual possess.
6) Management involves formal communication while leadership involves informal/friendly/vocal communication
7) Management is recognized officially while leadership is recognized by influence but not official
8) Managers are elected by organization and perform their duties till they satisfy the organization where as leaders are elected by followers and remain in that position till followers want
9) One last point all manager can become good leaders but all leaders cannot become good managers

For an organization to have an effective management it is necessary that managers must possess good leadership qualities
