Military veterans have much to offer companies that need hard-working team players who can adapt to many situations and tasks.
What can hiring managers do to create a welcoming environment for military veterans?
Military veterans have increasingly become a part of the wave which is growing in terms of their ability to adhere to the changing climate where work is considered as well as their ability to adapt their skill set in order to stay relatable in today's work environment. Simply put, military veterans have the ability to gain a new skill set such as learning how to program as they are discharged from their duties. Their ability to adapt, their drive to accomplish better performance as well as their experience of working with a team as a unit has great benefits when we consider their addition to any business’ workforce. In order to create the environment for a military veteran to feel welcomed, the management needs to be able to understand the fundamental points of acceptance, the need for recognition, dependence on the structure as well as a well-defined hierarchy as the cornerstone of military veterans view of the world. In the military, it is taught to follow orders and recognize the potential of the entire team in order to do so, thus being made to feel like a part of the group is essential. The employee should be trained in their ability to accept diversity, change in conduct as well as acceptance of experience and seniority in order to make the veterans feel welcomed and appreciated for their experience. They could also be assigned a mentor for their starting month or two in order for them to understand how the dynamics of the groups work and therefore realize the best possible execution of the process of being able to work as part of the group, providing their experience in order to bring the team together as a synergistic unit.
