Disaster Recovery Plan (DRP) describes all the steps to be involved in the planning and adapting to potential disaster and with a roadmap which will restore the business operations while Business Continuity Plan (BCP) ensures all of the most essential business functions will remain available after the disaster and until the disaster recovery process is completed.
The overlap between BCP and DRP and one of them is that DRP is a subset of BCP in that BCP attends to ensure that the business is viable before a disruptive event, during and after the disruptive event and this viability won’t be possible without the ability to quickly recover critical systems which is the fundamental role of DRP. And completion of BCP depends on completion of DRP.
Neither BCP nor DRP can survive without the other because DRP serves as a subset of BCP and the viability of BCP depend on DRP which if DRP fails BCP will also fail. For example a fire outbreak in a hospital pharmacy or drug store, DRP will set steps to be close off sections of the hospital around the pharmacy and look for a new location to house the pharmacy during reconstruction. It will in the short term also adopt a strategy to compensation for the shortage of possible drugs needed; by attempting to get the drugs from another pharmacy or from another hospital. The BCP will ensure that the hospital operations continue until a new store is made and enough drugs are supplied. If DRP fails here the hospital operations will also fail.
