I selected the following article “Attitude Matters” on Park University’s blog “the passage”. I selected the first paragraph.
“If seeing others succeed, doesn’t make you happy…You’re doing life wrong.”
I came across this quote several months ago and wrote it down because it felt significant. It’s easy to fall down the rabbit hole of feeling inadequate. You either thought that you’d be farther along by now in your career, you don’t understand the lecture like you expected to, or you see a social media feed of accomplishments that make yours pale in comparison. We are bombarded with information from others and it’s natural for us to measure our lives next to those that seem successful. But I’m here to remind you, because this is not new information, that you do you – and to take inspiration from those that you admire instead of living in a place of envy. We can’t always control what happens in our lives, but we can certainly control our responses. Because I have faith in this concept of control, it changes how I interact with others. I can control my attitude. I can control how I manage my time. I can control how I face challenges.
-Does the paragraph provide a clear topic sentence? The article begins with a quote that I believe gives a clear indication of what the article is going to be about.
- Is the paragraph unified and cohesive? I believe the paragraph is unified and cohesive with the point the author is trying to convey.
- Are the sentences easy to read and understand? I felt there were many sentences in this paragraph that were not easy to read. There are a lot of run on sentences that would have come across more clearly has they been divided into more than one sentence. For example the sentence, “But I’m here to remind you, because this is not new information, that you do you-and to take inspiration from those that you admire instead of living in a place of envy.” This sentence is long and even though this is not the most formal article, it includes jargon that may be hard for others to understand. A better example would have been to say something like, “But I’m here to remind you that you should do what works for you. It is important to take inspiration from those that you admire instead of living in a place of envy.”

- Are the sentence lengths varied to produce a natural flow? The sentence lengths are varied. There are some long ones such as “We are bombarded with information from others and it’s natural for us to measure our lives next to those that seem successful.” There are medium length sentences such as “Because I have faith in this concept of control, it changes how I intereact with others.” There are also short sentences such as “I can control how I face challenges.”
- Is the most important idea presented prominently in each sentence? I believe the author presented information to support her main idea throughout the paragraph.
- Does the paragraph use active and passive voices correctly? I believe the author correctly used active and passive voices throughout the paragraph.
Select at least five words used in the paragraph. List each word and address if the writer used these words correctly and effectively.
Significant- This word was used correctly. The author of the article felt the quote was significant. Another word she could have used would be “Important”.
Envy- This word was used correctly. Other examples she could have used would have been “jealousy” or “rivalry”.
Inadequate- This word was used correctly. I think this is the best word for the sentence.
Accomplishments- This word was used correctly and is the best choice for the sentence. Another word the author could have chosen that would work well would be “successes”.
Bombarded- This word was used correctly and I think this is the best word for the sentence.
