Write an essay: Identify and describe the causes of the Industrial Revolution. How did the Industrial Revolution change imperialism?
In the 18th century, the Industrial Revolution first started
throughout Britain but soon spread through Europe and North
America. Historians have described many reasons for the Industrial
Revolution, including: capitalism evolving, European colonialism,
coal mining activities, and the consequences of the Agricultural
Revolution.
Capitalism was a key component required for industrialization to
grow. Historians consider laissez-faire capitalism the type of
capitalism prevalent during the Industrial Revolution. Free market
capitalism or market capitalism is also often referred to as
laissez-faire capitalism.
Capitalism triggered the Industrial Revolution because industrialization involved considerable individual work and expenditure, not necessarily the state. For example, wealthy businessmen were important in Britain, where the Industrial Revolution started, because they used their wealth to build factories and mines. Without the advent of capitalism, this expenditure by individuals whose acts are motivated by the profit motive would not have been possible. However, as the Industrial Revolution began, capitalism's individualistic ideals helped create a climate in which industrialization flourished and gradually spread all over the world.
The influence of European colonialism was the next major factor that helped develop the Industrial Revolution. Although not explicitly a cause of the Industrial Revolution's start, imperialism as a philosophy was connected to industrialization's development. Imperialism is generally defined as being dominated by one nation by military, political, or economic control over another country. After the Discovery Period, strong European countries (Britain, France, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Belgium, etc.) conducted large-scale colonial campaigns to establish massive empires.
During this time, which historians term the Age of Imperialism, large parts of the world came under European influence, including: North America, South America, Africa, India, Australia, and China. In general, before and during the rise of industrialization, the Era of Imperialism existed. For example, in the 15th century, European nations started colonizing North and South America, starting with the famous four trips to the New World of Christopher Columbus.
For several reasons, European colonialism was essential to the beginning of the Industrial Revolution (especially in the UK). Next, the colonies produced during the Age of Imperialism supplied vast amounts of raw materials to the European countries that could then be used in the factories to produce goods. For example, during this period, the Trade Triangle formed in the Atlantic Ocean. European factories are supplied with North and South America capital in the Trade Triangle. In addition, in exchange for slavery, the goods produced were exported and sold in Africa.
The next main reason for the Industrial Revolution's emergence was the extraction of resources such as coal, crucial to industrialization processes. Britain, for instance, was the first to industrialize and had vast coal reserves in the state. Coal was a necessary ingredient in the industrial process because it fuelled the steam engines used in cars, ships and machinery of all kinds.
The link between the Industrial Revolution and colonialism proved to be a ruthless mix, as profit-making overshadowed social concerns about what was best for the subject nations or the people who served in the factories and fields most often. Nevertheless, it gave great wealth to Europe (and later to the United States). There are two main ways of linking the Industrial Revolution to colonialism. First, it made imperialism more important by the Industrial Revolution. Second, it made it more possible for colonialism.
The Industrial Revolution helped create a situation in which European countries (as well as the U.S. and eventually Japan) felt they needed to have large empires. For two main reasons, they wanted those empires. First of all, they wanted places to get raw materials from. Such countries ' developed economies required raw materials, and colonialism was seen as a means of obtaining these materials. Second, they felt they needed captive markets to sell the factory-produced goods. In this way, colonial territories could also be useful.
Also, the Industrial Revolution allowed these countries to take over and retain empires much more. The Industrial Revolution greatly enhanced these forces ' military strength. It gave better weapons to them. This gave them ships that in pre-industrial times could reach different parts of the world faster and more efficiently than sailing ships could. Such kinds of influences made entering and occupying every corner of the globe easier for Europeans.
