What do you want to be when you grow up? Still not sure? Ask around. You’re not alone. Chances are, your friends and relatives aren’t certain either. Getting the job and career you want is not easy. It takes time, effort, and persistence. And even though you will probably follow multiple career paths in your life, your career-planning process will be easier (and more effective) if you take the time to develop a personal career plan.

Begin by answering the following questions. (Hint: Treat this seriously. If you do it effectively, this plan could guide your career decisions for the next 5 to 7 years.)

1. Describe your strengths and weaknesses. Don’t just rely on your opinions of your abilities. Ask your parents, relatives, friends, and employers what they think, too. Encourage them to be honest and then be prepared to hear some things that you may not want to hear. Remember, though, this information can help you pick the right job or career.

2. Write a mini advertisement for the job you want to have 5 years from now. Be specific. Describe the company, title, responsibilities, required education and experience, salary, and benefits. Use employment ads in the Sunday job listings as inspiration.

3. Create a detailed plan to obtain this job. In the short term, what classes do you need to take? Should you change your major? Do you need a business major or minor or maybe a minor in a foreign language? What kind of summer work experience will move you closer to getting the job you want 5 years from now? What job do you need to get right out of college to obtain the work experience you need? Create a specific plan for each of the 5 years in your career plan, keeping in mind that the plans for later years are likely to change. The value in planning is that it forces you to think about what you want and the steps you can take now to help achieve those goals.

4. Decide when you will monitor and evaluate the progress you’re making with your plan. Career experts suggest that every 6 months is about right. Pick two dates and write them in your schedule. Furthermore, right now, before you forget, set five specific, challenging goals that you need to accomplish in the next 6 months in order to achieve your career plans.

I feel my strengths include leading others, teaching others, and learning from my mistakes. I have learned overtime that I have a knack for being able to teach others how to do a job or preform a task. It is very easy for me to describe how to do something in many different ways. I have always found myself to be a natural leader. I am not much of a vocal leader but lead by my actions. I practice what I preach and people tend to notice that about myself and gravitate to me because of that. I rarely make the same mistake twice. I take pride in learning from my mistakes and take well to constructive criticism. I am told by others that I am also a very hard worker, a good time manager, and pay great attention to detail.

My biggest weakness would be getting to comfortable at work. Once I feel I have a good grasp of my responsibilities at work and understanding of the people I work with I tend to let my guard down. I start trusting people more and that seems to always come back and get me. Others tell me that my biggest weakness is verbal communication. I would rather show someone how to do something, or show them what I mean instead of telling them.

DESCRIPTION

We are seeking an experienced Sales Training leader to evaluate and develop our companywide sales training programs. This individual will lead, supervise, and coach the sales training team in evaluating the skill set of our new hires and existing employees. Then provide our employees a consistent learning experience for the achievement of corporate goals.

The position functions as an internal consultant to senior leaders, by assessing developmental gaps and learning needs of our sales force and determining appropriate, and measurable, training initiatives. This position will include the management of existing programs and the design/creation of new programs and training materials, to support the company’s growth and success.

RESPONSIBILITIES

This role is responsible for developing expertise and proficiency in the following areas:

• Consultative Sales (both basic sales skills and selling in our specific market environment)
• Product and Solution (what it is and how to sell it effectively)
• Sales Process (forecast management, pipeline management, territory management)
• Industry (industries, function, buyers)

SKILLS and COMPETENCIES

• Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. Ability to communicate with individuals at all levels of the organization, including the ability to present to small and large audiences. Must be able to make learning engaging and fun.
• Demonstrated expertise in managing learning projects, developing and delivering training sessions, facilitation, sales training techniques and tools.
• Must be self-motivated with the ability to prioritize multiple simultaneous projects/deliverables and see them through to successful completion.
• Must be adaptable and flexible with the ability to constantly monitor the organization and be open to changing plans when the data warrants.
• Experience in sales, software sales, recruitment industry and/or software industry is a plus.

REQUIREMENTS

• Bachelor’s degree from a 4-year college or university
• 5+ years of sales training experience
• Minimum of 5 years of management experience
• Strong leadership and team development
• Excellent ability to motivate, inspire, and communicate to multiple levels of the organization
• Superior written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills
• Strong attention to detail
• Ability to drive vision and consciously cultivate a culture of positivity and excellence
• Personally skilled in key tools & applications, MS office applications, etc.
• Ability to handle a high volume of work in a short period of time, handle multiple priorities simultaneously and operate in a demanding work environment is important.

I believe that I am already on the right path to get this job. I already have 3 years of management experience. I have one year have HR experience in which I was over training of 160 employees. I have one year of retail management experience. I have one year and counting of business management experience. I currently own my own small business in which I am in complete control of everyday business activities. I have over 20 different accounts that I service and full and part-time employees that I manage. I will have more than enough experience to obtain this job the only thing I am currently lacking is the education that I am currently pursuing. I will not need to change my major. Business Management will be a great degree to have for this job. I believe that if I finish my education and continue to gain experience in owning my own business that I will meet the requirements to be a strong candidate for this job.
