Hektoen enteric agar known as differential agar and also a selective agar normally culture in Shigella and organisms salmonella. This media contains some indicator like hydrogen sulfide and lactose. Organisms salmonella can produce hydrogen sulfide and in the presence of hydrogen sulfide ,the media containing thiosulfate produce black precipitate.Hydrogen sulfide is not produce by sigella. So sigella colonies are appeared in pink orange colony.
