What is the correct way to solve this significant figure problem?

1000 (1 sigfig) + 1.2 (2 sigfig) =?

And explain why?

1000? or 1001.2?

The correct answer is

Actual sum = 1001.2

Reported sum = 1001.2 because mainly concept of solving sum is to have reported to the value which has least significant figure but in this case it is not possible to report the sum as least significant figure . So that your answer should be 1001.2
