Gene duplication mainly the whole genome duplication has the ability to provide an evolutionary advantage by giving the organisms multiple copies of certain genes that is considered favorable. This type of duplication results in divergence and ultimately leading to the formation of new species over time. Gene duplication is considered as a major mechanism which during molecular evolution produces new genetic material in an individual. And that when the new genetic material is favorable and advantageous the natural selection selects it positively which then becomes fixed in a population. Neofunctionalization works together with gene duplication in which the gene copies mutate to develop a new function, previously not found in the ancestral gene. It Is a type of adaptive mutation process.
