Cadmium hydroxide, Cd(OH)2, has a Ksp = 7.2 * 10-15 at 25 ℃.

A) Write the chemical equation for the solubility equilibrium, calculate the molar solubility (mol Cd(OH)2/L solution) and gram solubility (g Cd(OH)2/100 mL H2O), of cadmium hydroxide in pure water, and determine the molar concentrations of all Cd2+ and OH- in the saturated solution of cadmium hydroxide.

B) Will the solubility of cadmium hydroxide change if nitric acid is added to this solution? Explain.

C) . Suppose 100.0 mL of 0.0100 M Cd(NO3)2 (aq) and 60.0 mL of 0.00600 M KOH (aq) are mixed. Will a precipitate form? Show your reasoning.

Answer #1

B. Adding HNO3 in the solution will increase the solubility because the H+ ions from the HNO3 will react with OH ions from the salt thus forming water and so concentration of OH will decrease which will shift the equilibrium towards right thus increasing solubility.

C. Yes it will take place and 0.18 milimoles of Cadmium Hydroxide will get precipitated.
