One of your classmates is confident that a reaction vessel filled with difluoromethane (CH2F2) has a higher melting point and boiling point than a reaction vessel filled with methanol (CH3OH).  Is your classmate correct?  Explain your answer

Classmate is not correct. Boiling point and melting point of methanol (CH3OH) is higher ( b.p. 64.7 oC & m.p. - 97.6 oC ) than difloromethane (CH2F2, b.p. -52 oC & m.p. - 136 oC ), because of presence of hydrogen bonding in between methanol molecules. Due to which more energy is needed to break these bonds hence increased b.p. & m.p. in case of methanol.

O-H bond in methanol (alcohol) is highly polar because of electrionegativity of oxygen. Oxygen carries a partial -ve charge, hydrogen carries a partial +ve charge. This results an attractive force between partialy +ve hydrogen atom of one alcohol molecule and partialy -ve oxygen of another alcohol molecule. This forces of attraction are called hydrogen bonding.
