Momentum physics. The mass of the hammer is 225 g and its velocity, just before it hits the nail (Diameter of 0.5 mm), is 5.0 m/s downward. After hitting the nail, the hammer remains in contact with it for 0.1 s. After this time both the hammer and the nail have stopped moving.
What is the momentum of the hammer just before it hits the nail?Show how you work out your answer and give the units and direction.Momentum =

Answer #1

The mass of the hammer m=225g =0.225kg

initial speed is 5m/s

The diameter is 0.5mm= 0.5x10-3m

The impulsive time is 0.1s

The initial momentum is P=mv = 0.225x5=1.125kgm/s in he diretion of hammer

The chnege momentum is

Since the impact time is very short we impulse

F= 1.125/0.1=11.25N is the force acted on the nail.
