Is the “Good to Great” model by Jim Collins an effective leadership strategy in developing an ethical police department? Why or Why not? Support your answer for or against with examples.
Personally speaking, I believe that “Good to Great” model by Jim Collins is an effective leadership strategy in developing an ethical police department. After having an overview of the book by Jim Collins, the model proposed “Good to Great” is a highly effective model to create an ethical leadership in policing. Great does not mean profits or luck or praise, it is about being disciplined and choice of the ethical standards in critical situations. It is the government’s choice to be great, good or just average. However, Jim Collin’s 7 step process helps to push their levels from good to great. A classic example is : A Police Chief is trying to reduce the crime rate to 50% in his jurisdiction. Applying Collins’ principles would mean that the police chief’s target is not only to achieve his target of reducing the crime rate in his jurisdiction but also take effective measures in such a way that the crime rate is always at a lower level even after his retirement.
