Genetic information in viruses- The nucleic acid of a virus is enclosed within a capsid ( protein coat). The capsid is comprised of several copies of a single protein or different proteins. This structure aids the virus in encoding all the information for forming a large capsid in a small number of genes. A capsid with the enclosed nucleic acid is called as the nucleocapsid. In some viruses, the protein subunits form helical structure surrounding an RNA or DNA molecule. Most viruses have either DNA or RNA as their genetic material. The nucleic-acid may be single or double-stranded. There are some viruses which shift their genetic information from RNA to DNA. During this process, at first, the RNA is first transcribed into DNA, then into RNA to finally protein.
