Group think is one of the dangerous missteps in the decision-making process. As a member of a long-standing policy committee at work, I would take the following steps to avoid any “groupthink” symptoms: Invite external perspectives- the decision-making step should protect the external perspectives which helps in incorporating the decisions in the group’s thinking. Anticipate – The important trait of a good manager is to possess anticipating skills. I would anticipate possible Groupthink so that I can develop strategies to handle the risk. Team size- I would limit the team size to less than 10 to avoid any possible Groupthink symptom. Keep alternatives- Always have alternatives so that the team accepts the alternative in case the management rejects the first solution. Structured discussion phase- The discussion should be structured and lengthy to allow the group members to provide their viewpoints. These viewpoints would be considered during the decision making process.

Groupthink is an outcome of a thought process that prevents culmination of new ideas among the group members who fear that by doing so, they will not comply to the group's ideology and will be alienated. This hinders creativity and problem solving and lead to the decisions which are correct in the view of majority.

To prevent the groupthink, besides all the ideas mentioned in the discussion post, is anonymous idea sharing through a common electronic platform which conceals the identity of the person putting up his /her point and argument. This will lead to a healthy exchange of ideas and a debate regarding the most appropriate option. The passive members will be back to life, and those fearing alienation will come froward with their ideas openly and assertively. The result will be a well informed and rational decision making process.
