If I were in Janet Moore’s shoes I would have accepted the job, stayed on with the company and would have worked to ensure that the company changes its marketing direction and no longer targets the younger segment of the population.
I will take this decision based on the ethical principle and theory of Utilitarianism. As per this theory of ethics the right or wrong can be differentiated on the basis of the outcomes. This theory states that an action will be considered ethical if it produces greatest good for the greatest number of people. If Janet does not accept the job she will not be able to influence the company’s marketing direction and the health interests of the younger target market will be harmed. This will not be considered as an ethical action as per the theory of Utilitarianism. However if Janet accepts the job and stays to work with the company then she can influence the company to change its marketing direction. In this manner she can bring into picture the impact of consequentialism of her decision to accept the job and make a difference so that a greater good is achieved for a great number of people.
Janet should also take this decision on the basis of the ethical principle of virtue. The virtue ethical theory judges a person by his/her character and hence attributes like morals and motivation are considered here. Janet, being a responsible and a moral citizen, should take the job so as to prevent Union Tobacco to attract and target younger segment of population from using the snuff products of the company.
