A large proportion of the genetic diversity in a population is generated through independent assortment of alleles (versions of genes). What event during meiosis leads to independent assortment? Why is this a random event?

Alleles of a gene are located on same portion of homologous chromosomes. In the meiosis I, during metaphase I these homologous chromosomes arranged on metaphasic plate facing opposite poles. Then they move to different poles during anaphase. So during gamete formation, pair of alleles of different chromosomes seperate.

It is a random event as each homologous chromosome pair can organize themselves in metaphase I in random orientation independently of other pair of homologous chromosome. Each allele has equal probability of pairing up with any allele of another chromosome or seperating from any allele of another chromosome. It can pair randomly and independently.
