Net neutrality means that our access to the internet and all the content on it is neutral. Whether I choose to access Facebook or Tumblr, I should be able to use both with the same internet speed from my internet service provider (ISP), be that Comcast or AT&T. These providers shouldn’t be able to create different lanes of the network based on the firm’s ability to pay, else a giant like Amazon would be getting preferential treatment as compared to a smaller e-retail platform like Magento.

In 2019, after many years of inaction, the FCC finally established a ruling on net neutrality, pushed by President Obama, which prevented any preferential treatment by ISPs and thus supported the free web. However, earlier this year, current FCC Chairman Ajit Pai proposed a new ruling which would go in the exact opposite direction, allowing ISPs to abuse their power and create different lanes. Note that Chairman Pai, appointed by President Trump, previously worked as a lawyer for Verizon, which just happens to be one of the ISPs that wants net neutrality to end. The FCC voted 2–1 in support of Chairman Pai’s proposals in May, but these proposals have not been implemented yet and the US is currently in limbo. In the meantime, there is a number of campaigns that hope to prevent Chairman Pai and the FCC from implementing this new proposal.
