Compare the typical size of smoke particles to that of the wavelengths of visible light. How does this size comparison affect human visibility in smoke? Would the ability to see in IR help alleviate or exacerbate the problem of limited visibility in a smoke filled room?

Answer #1

Any typical wood smoke particle size ranges less than 1 micrometer. Roughly less than 10000 angstroms. For a relative comparison, visible light sizes are from 4500 to 6350 angstroms.

This size comparison causes more scattering of visible light amongst dust particles. Therefore the visibility will be reduced. However you may be able to see red because it will travel the farthest without scattering

In a smoke filled room there will be warmth everywhere. An IR vision would help you in seeing anything apart which emits heat. In a smoked room , all you will be able to see would be clustered red patches..This is because hotter bodies emit more IR rays than cooler counterparts. So this vision will only cause you problems in seeing.

Absorption and transmission: When a photon of light hits a molecule of gas or a particle in the atmosphere, there are three possibilities: 1) it can be absorbed (the energy is converted to heat), 2) it can be reflected (it continues on but in a different direction), 3) or it can be transmitted. These processes determine our ability to see distant objects (such as the mountains around Los Angeles and Irvine) and the colors in the sky (such as blue...

P29.4 It has taken roughly 13.75 Gy for the light from the CMB to reach us. But how far is the matter emitting the CMB away from us at present? This is the distance that we want to compare with the 10,000-Gly distance mentioned in the section “Solving the Horizon Problem.” (Hint: The result is not 13.75 Gly: there is a big difference between the cosmic time t and the cosmic time parameter 1.) held Solving the Horizon P, he...

Please read the article and answer about questions. You and the Law Business and law are inseparable. For B-Money, the two predictably merged when he was negotiat- ing a deal for his tracks. At other times, the merger is unpredictable, like when your business faces an unexpected auto accident, product recall, or government regulation change. In either type of situation, when business owners know the law, they can better protect themselves and sometimes even avoid the problems completely. This chapter...
