  1. The Coastal GasLink pipeline proposal would see natural gas shipped to the West coast for eventual transport to Asia. As you may be aware, it is being opposed by some indigenous groups in British Columbia, and has been criticized by many for enabling the continued use of fossil fuels and the associated carbon dioxide emissions. Describe the reasons why an environmentalist might nevertheless argue that the pipeline could result in lower carbon emissions and should be built.

Answer #1

The reasons why environmentalists can favour the construction of pipeline are:

  • The transportation from pipelines will require least fuel per unit of gas transported and therefore it produce least amount of carbon dioxide as compared of using tankers, ships or by other medium of transportation which are responsible for high volume of carbon dioxide emissions.
  • The volume of gas transported from gas pipelines is enormously huge and the same volume will require lot of trains, thinkers or ships which needs to be built and this will in itself will produce a lot of green house gases.
  • The inter countries pipe lines uses high pressure to transport natural gas pressure can usually go upto 1,400 to 1,500 psi and this reduces the volume of gas to upto 500 times and thus this again makes less volume to be transported and this will again save energy and is more environmental sustainable.
