Is She Cause It; No Is Him Cause It
“At any given moment you have the power to say this is not how the story is going to end.” ― Christine Mason Miller. Domestic violence is any foul behavior used to intimidate, control or humiliate a spouse or a partner. The victims could be abused either physically or psychologically. Domestic violence can be targeted towards a man or a woman; however more often than not, the victims are usually women and children.
Even if children are not the direct target of violence, they may witness up to 80% of domestic assaults[i]. If left unchecked, the trauma of violence could scar the development of the victim and the children for life. Domestic violence can often cause children to become aggressive towards the society. In addition to many other issues, children exposed to domestic violence can become anti-social, withdrawn, resort to substance abuse, emotionally distant, inability to experience empathy or guilt and fear about the future. In comparison to other children, those who suffer or have witnessed violence are more prone to insomnia, bed wetting, verbal, motor, and cognitive issues. Learning difficulties, depression and anxiety are some of the other consequences.
People are often under the impression that domestic violence is a private, family matter and left alone to the families to sort it out. But, it impacts the community in a many ways. One of the most important and lasting consequences is the impact on family bonds. The aggressor may intimidate the children’s teachers and friends or the victims and their colleagues. An important economic effect is the loss of employee productivity. Victims may not show up at work or even if they do so, they may perform well. As per some estimates, the net loss due to drop in productivity could amount to US$1.14 billion annually[ii]. Additionally, employers may also be held liable for the victim’s safety. The local government’s budget for medical treatment of the victims may also be impacted due to domestic violence. According to some reports, the total medical costs for treating injuries arising from domestic violence have been US$5.8 billion. In addition to the immediate injuries, violence can lead to chronic conditions such as heart disease, stress etc. among the victims; thus inflating health costs for all. Domestic violence also leads to rising cases of homelessness. For instance, in 2005, around 50% of cities in the US disclosed that domestic violence was the major reason for homelessness in their area.
Domestic violence is a rising problem in many countries. As a responsible society, we will have to be extra vigilant and explore ways of effectively intervening within our schools, workplaces and neighbourhood. We need to raise awareness on the impact of domestic violence, create policies and laws that protect the victims.
