It can be useful to analyze the steps of glycolysis with respect to the four basic types of enzymes required by this central catabolic pathway and to consider whether each enzyme produces or harvests the energy of an activated carrier. List every intermediate molecule as glucose is oxidized to pyruvate and indicate which type of enzyme (of the four listed below) is required—or if none apply. Also, indicate whether an activated energy carrier is involved, and, if so, how.

Enzyme types: kinase, isomerase, mutase, dehydrogenase

Answer #1

Glycolysis intermediates -

  • The enzyme, Kinase catalyzes the transfer of phosphate groups (P) from high-energy ATP molecules to specific substrates, wheras the dehydrogenase enzyme catalyses the removal of hydrogen atoms from a particular molecule. Isomerases converts a molecule from one isomer to another by facilitating the intramolecular rearrangements, in which the bonds are broken and formed, wheras mutase is an enzyme that catalyzes the transfer of a functional group from one position to another within the same molecule.

1) Kinase

2) Isomerase

3) Mutase

4) Dehydrogenase
