Answer #1

The key idea that any student needs to understand before conducting the experiment is that sound traverses through a medium as disturbances in that medium. The particles of the medium vibrate themselves as sound travels through it. This is the key reason why sound needs a medium to travel and cannot travel in vacuum. It is the particles of the material that vibrate to produce sound and when sound travels through the material the particles of the material vibrate.

A simple experiment can be performed to demonstrate the effect. A tight membrane can be wound around the lid of a tumbler. A few iron filings are to be sprinkled on top of the membrane. A tap on the membrane will produce sound and you can observe the filings going up and down. This is because the particles of the membrane are vibrating. This shows that vibrating materials can make sound.

Similarly, when a sound source is placed near the membrane similar effect can be seen. The membrane will start to vibrate and filings will go up and down. This is because the particles of the membrane are vibrating. This shows that sound can make materials vibrate.
