Keeping fast without even drinking water for 24 hours is a superstitious ritual in Hindu religion and many female keep this fast for long live of children or husband.

Rituals play a role of strengthening belief in supermighty thus help in maintaining an order in the society. People fear some mighty individual who can watch them 244*7 in any of hook and corner.

Operant conditiong and reinforcement principle applies to rituals and superstitions. A person feel stressed and follow rituals to get help from almighty. Following rituals divert mind and trust help reduce the stress. This reduction in stress acts as reinforcement for the person and she continue to perform rituals in future due to this.
