Q1 : Name and explain two reasons why employees resist change
Answer : Below are some of the reasons why employees resist change
i) Fear of job loss : Employees often fear that any new development or change may make them obsolete or redundant. They fear that the change would require newer people with latest skill-set and the company would rather hire fresh employees than training the existing employees. Hence the existing employees resist change.
ii) Lack of communication : Often the change which is happening in the firm is not accompanied by effective communication from the higher management. The employees see various changes happening around them, they are asked to work on initiatives which are related to a upcoming major change but they are unaware of why the changes are happening and what benefit would the change bring to them because these have not been communicated to them. Thus due to lack of knowledge about the change and the benefits it would bring, employees resist change.
iii) Fear of losing control : Employees often fear that any new change would lead to them losing control and becoming irrelevant. This is especially true of technological change. Employees fear that the new technology would take over most of their tasks and they would not be required to carry out those tasks and hence would lose control. This fear of becoming irrelevant and losing control makes employee resist change.
