The theory of Ricardo says that with unrestricted free trade, prospective world manufacturing is higher. His comparative advantage theory indicates that trade is a positive-sum game in which financial gain is realized by all participating nations.

Unrestricted free trade is useful, but the benefits may not be as good as the easy model of comparative advantage suggests immobile resources decreasing dynamic yields and economic growth, criticized by Samuelson. However, opening up a nation to trade could boost the resource inventory of a nation as enhanced supplies become accessible from overseas.

Free trade improves prosperity for Americans— and all participating nations ' citizens— by enabling customers to purchase more, better-quality goods at reduced cost. It drives economic growth, increased effectiveness, increased innovation, and higher fairness that goes hand in hand with a scheme based on rules. As general trade — exports and imports — increases, these advantages improve.

Competitiveness is driven by free trade. Free trade requires American companies and employees to adapt to the global marketplace's changing requirements. But to remain competitive, these changes are critical, and competition is what drives long-term development.
Free trade fosters equity. There is less chance for cronyism when everyone follows the same rules-based scheme, or the capacity of participating countries to skew trade benefits to favorite sides. In the lack of such a scheme, it is easier for larger and better-connected companies to obtain unfair benefits such as tax and regulatory loopholes that shield them from competition.
