A patient has come in with a sore throat it's narrowed down to being Corynebacterium diphtheriae or Streptococcus pyogenes. What characteristics and other tests (Ex: Blood agar test) could be used to distinguish the two bacteria.

Blood agar test

Corynebacterium diptheriae forms grey black colonies with granular appearance and the colonies are translucent with opaque centers, convex shape with continuous borders in tellurite agar plate.

Streptococcus pyogenes are identified through beta hemolysis characteristic through hemolysis of red blood cell completely.

Hence large zones of beta hemolysis can be seen on blood agar plate
