1. Find a picture of some type of athletic footwear which shows the sole of the shoe. How does the design of the sole influence the frictional characteristics of the shoe? How would this affect the function of the shoe?
this is one of the sports shoe
that i use . as you can see there are particular shapes in the sole
of this shoe.this particular structures are there to increase the
friction. the shape and size of these will vary according to the
use.
the following photos shows the soles of badminton, trucking and
basketball shoes respectively

so as you can see the type of grooves decide the use of the shoes. the type of friction needed for each purpose will be different. so the shape size cutting etc of the grooves in the sole of the shoe affect the function of the shoe

10) Utilizing the picture to the right, identify which type of plant (Bryophyte. Gymnosperm, Monocot, etc.) this is and explain how you came to this conclusion (2 pts). If you came upon this plant in its natural habitat and could observe it in closer detail and take it back to a lab for further study, what other characteristics would you look for to help you identify it (3 pts)? Answer:
Problem 5: The top picture shows a wave pulse on a string (string 1-blue) travelling to the right, where the string is attached to another string (string 2 - orange). The bottom picture shows the reflected wave some time later. If the tension on both strings is the same, a) [2 points] Is string 2 more or less dense than string 1? Justify your answer b) [3 points) in which string will the wave travel faster? Justify your answer. c)...

Question 1 [25 marks] Figure 1 shows a brake drum 325 mm internal diameter, acted on by two brake shoes which are mounted on a pin A, and pushed apart by two hydraulically operated pistons at B, each exerting a force of P on the shoe on which it makes contact. The blocks are centred on the horizontal centre line as shown in the figure. The coefficient of friction is 0.25. Find the value of P to produce a brake...
