Most freshwater fish are unable to survive in water with high concentrations of bicarbonate. Draw a diagram of a ion exchanging cell from a freshwater fish gill and, using the diagram, outline a possible physiological reason for this observation.

The above figure shows the ion exchnge mechanism in fish gill. According to the ionic concentration in water and gill cell the ionic movement occurs. High concentration of bicarbonates which increases the alkalinity of water affect the fish health. First it dissolves the mucus layer of the fish. It will cause bacterial attack to the fish. Another reason when alkalinity increases pH suddenly varies and which promote the production of un-ionised ammonia which is toxic to fish.
