Excess exposure to ultraviolet light can cause DNA damage because of production of methylated thymidine.

DNA damage from UV lights causes cross-linking between adjacent cytosine and thymine bases creating dimers or any pyrimidine dimers. This causes a kink in the DNA that keeps it from proper mRNA transcription or DNA replication.
