Enlightenment is an era that brought out the importance of free will, rationality of human beings, importance of science and technology and last but not the least, proving religions and their teachings wrong. Religions thus for held people under their clutches and made them slaves. They prevented people from acting on their own by tying them to the concept of sin, hell and heaven. Religions also helped the rich and the monarchy and sold confessions or pardons for money. On the other hand scientific advancement and reasoning put forth individual rights and life as important things. So, people started to lose faith on religions and used them only for the ritualistic purposes and removed them from playing the central part of their lives.
