With reference to your upcoming meeting with XYZ Company based in Istanbul in Turkey I would like to point out certain facts and points of reference with regards to Turkey as a country and its citizens. These facts and points of reference will allow you to make your meeting all the more fruitful as you will be able to adhere to the acceptable cultural and business procedural norms for that country.
While Turkey is a Muslim nation it is highly westernized as well thanks to the influence of Eastern Mediterranean, Central Asian and Eastern European regions. As such business etiquettes in Turkey are a mix of Muslim influence and western influence.
When you first meet the manager of the company that buys products from us be sure to use a firm handshake. Always wait for the other person to first offer their hand. The business meetings are usually formal in Turkey as work and business is serious matter to them. Appointments should be taken well in advance and schedule of the meetings should be communicated beforehand. Lastly do not force any pressure on the managers there as Turkish people do not appreciate being rushed. Use of pressure as well as deadlines should be avoided in all situations and circumstances. Lastly be prepared for negotiations as Turkish people are hard bargainers and so you will have to compromise a bit with regards to discounts, credit terms etc.
Try and be formal in your approach and always be polite and calm. Never appear to be hasty or impatient as it will work against you and the business proposition that you are offering.
