The ground state of Cd is [Kr]5s24d10 while for In is [Kr]5s24d105p5. a)What are the states that arise in each case from these configurations and which has the lowest energy (ground state)? b) The atom of In ionizes and looses 3 of the 5p electrons. One of the 5p electrons that remain is stimulated to an nd orbital (n>4). What states arise from this configuration of ion In+3 if we suppose that the jj coupling is stronger than the ls coupling? Draw an energy diagram in which in which the energy corrections will appear.

Answer #1

(a) The inert gas 'Kr' has the least energy as it has a closed-shell electronic configuration, whereas 'In' do not.

(b) The ground state electronic configuration of 'I' is [Kr]5s24d105p5 since 'In' belongs to the VIIA group.

Now, the first excited state electronic configuration of 'I' is [Kr]5s24d105p45d1, which can be shown as follows.

By loosing the three unpaired electrons, 'I' forms 'I3+', as a result, the electronic configuration of 'I3+' is [Kr]4d105s25p3
