Question- Typical neurons are not capable to complete mitosis with maturity. A victim has now been identified with brain cancer and is undertaking medication. Based on anything you understand around cell division and cancer, why does this appear uncommon?

It is true that neurons are not able to perform mitosis after maturity.

It is unusual to get brain cancers because we know that most cancers are caused due to error in DNA replication during mitosis. This leads to overexpression or no expression of some genes which ultimately break down cell machinery. Cancer cells divide at a phenomenal rate which offers them a chance at more mutations, this is why a typical cancer cells usually gets mutated at several gene locations.

Now if neurons are not dividing, how do brain tumors happen?

There are multiple answers to this, firstly there are many supportive brain cells like glial cells which can lead to a type of brain cancer called glioblastoma. Similarly, other supportive cells cause different type of brain cancers.

Second Most cancers are caused by metastasis in which the cancer from other parts of body spreads to brain or any other area.

Third, due to previous genetic deformity and several environmental factors Tumors may arise in brain cells which ultimately give rise to brain cancer.
