Muscular asymmetry is the imbalance in terms of strength or muscle mass on one side of the body. It is the uneven strength or size of the muscle on one side when compared to that of the counterpart. Muscular asymmetry usually happens in sports where the players have a dominant side, therefore developing strength on the dominant side alone. The other side remains weak relative to the dominant side.
The muscular asymmetries that need to be corrected include larger biceps, triceps, rhomboids, traps, quadriceps, etc. than that of the other side. This causes one side of a body part to become too tight. It is corrected by performing unilateral exercises. Unilateral exercises isolate and concentrate on one side of the body, unlike bilateral exercises. Muscular asymmetries need to be fixed for the following reasons:
1) Muscular asymmetry can lead to injury due to the improper position and movement of the body part.
2) It leads to incorrect form and body posture.
3) Overcompensation of the stronger side of the body leading to injury and pain.
4) More likely to develop muscle shears and twists due to muscular imbalance.
5) Difficulty in moving the body properly and comfortably.
6) May lead to muscular degeneration or atrophy
