1) Selective media is the type of media which is used for allowing the growth of only selected organism.
Example: An experiment can be designed to isolate the selected type of organism such as those resistant to ampicillin can be grown in the ampicillin containing media. In this type of media only those bacteria which has ampicillin resistance will grow whereas those lacking the same will not grow.
2) Differential media is the type of media which is used to distinguish one type of microorganism from other growing in the same media. In this type of media there occurs the selection of microorganism on the basis of biochemical characteristic of a microorganism growing in the presence of specific type of nutrient.
Example: An experiment can be designed to isolate the type of organism that is capable of sucrose and lactose fermentation by growing the microorganism in streptococcuseosin methylene blue (EMB).
The enrichment media contains all the necessary nutrient for the growth of microorganism.
Design an experiment to isolate a bacterium by using selective, differential and/or enrichment medium
Define the following terms: Selective media Differential media Enrichment media Selective differential media
Define selective medium. /1 What is differential medium? /1 Which medium will require you to flood the plate with Iodine (found in the yellow bin in your staining cabinet)? What color reaction do you anticipate observing if the organism metabolizes the nutrient in the medium? /2
A selective medium A. Can never be a differential medium B. contains a compound that allows visual identification of the ability to perform a specific biochemical process C. Contains compounds that inhibit the growth of certain bacteria D. Must contain bile salts, crystal violet and sheep blood

21) Indicate whether nutrient broth is a selective or differential media by marking the appropriate box(es). If the medium is both selective and differential, mark both. If the medium is neither selective nor differential, check the "neither" box selective O differential O neither 22) Indicate whether phenol red dextrose agar is a selective or differential media by marking the appropriate box(es). If the medium is both selective and differential, mark both. If the medium is neither selective...
78 Exercise 7: Selective and Differential Growth Medium and Tests 1 have been identified. These arms are ganima prutenbacteria. Trods and oxidase negative There are also gram+ onanisms among our unknowns. The blochemical changes we aim to assess are most often mediated by bacterial enzymes and others are fermentations. Color and/or texture changes in the media will aid in the identification of the unknown. The bacterium can be different lated on the basis of their metabolic capacity to manifest biochemical...
Selective and Differential media used in the laboratory: • Define selective media and use a particular medium as the example to explain how it works – Lecture 2 – slides 13, 14 and notes • Define differential media and use a particular medium as the example to explain how it works
PRE-LAB QUESTIONS 1. Could blood agar be classified as a selective or differential medium? Explain. 2. Describe, briefly, the three common types of hemolysis. 3. If multiple colonies are seen on your blood agar plate after the incubation and all of them exhibit a-hemolysis, are they all members of the same species? Why or why not?
Mannitol salt agar (MSA) is a both a selective and differential medium. Which of the following regarding MSA is TRUE? (There may be more than one answer) ( MSA turns yellow when bacteria are able to ferment maltose I MSA selects for acid tolerant bacteria () MSA turns yellow when bacteria are able to ferment mannitol MSA selects for salt tolerant bacteria
