How do game theory models differ from other optimality models, like the optimal patch use model or the diet models?
Both deal with the benefits and costs of a behavior. Both Game theory and Optimality model deals with benefits of cost of behavior.
In Optimality theory prediction of behavior for a particular animal is independent of what others are doing. On the contrary, in game theory model selection among alternative behavior is dependent on behavior of larger population. A game theory involves studies of a form of frequency dependent selection.
An Optimality Model assumes that strategies are heritable and this optimal strategy is always available for selection in the population and this optimal strategy had a fair chance to get selected in a population.
Whereas in game theory competition plays and important role in deciding the behavior of the animal and is dependent on how fierce is the competition. According to game theory outcome of a contest depends on the participant and the opponent. Thus, as per game theory evolutionary games can have different structures and outcomes depends on the behavior of the participants.
