How did the movement for women’s rights in the 19th and early 20th centuries compare to the women’s liberation movement of the 1960s-1970s?
Women’s Rights Movements by the end of the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century were at their initial stage and they had to struggle hard to fight the already established ale dominant mind-set. This would mean that it was not easy for them to challenge the male dominant society. It was the beginning stage thus, they had to initiate fights for all the basic rights such as, education, employment, property and voting. Finally, during the initial stage, they were fighting for only the white women’s rights and abolition of slavery was instrumental in making the women gain more confidence. However, Women’s Rights Movements during the 1960s were fighting from a strong base where they already had the rights to the basic rights. This time, they were fighting for their individual rights, independent life, right to abortion etc. This would mean that they were changing the family structure, employment scenario and social roles. Again, the Civil Rights Movements were instrumental in motivating women to go for their rights but this time it was for all the women and not just white women.
