A typical human contains 46 chromosomes and a typical mouse cell contains 40 chromosomes, yet the total mass of DNA in the nucleus of each type of cell is equal to the other. Explain how this is possible.

It can be because of the presence of different numbers of genes in the chromosome of both humans and mouse. In humans there are 46 chromosomes, so that means they will be containing relatively less genes as compared to the 40 chromosomes present in mouse. It is because when the number of chromosomes are less in number, it has to hold many number of genes. So, the difference in chromosome number is balanced by the presence of more genes in mouse and that is why, the total mass of DNA in the nucleus of each type of cell is equal to the another.
