Vertigo I am sure reflected the attitudes about gender roles in the United States in the 1950s. Midge was an unusual woman of the times, in that she had her own career, instead of the typical shop girl or secretary that is often portrayed in movies of that time. But at the same time, when she did the self portrait of her in the same style as the painting of Carlotta, and it backfired, she was pretty hard on herself. Even though their talk states that she broke off their engagement, the audience is left with the thought that she is still in love with him but knows that he is not in love with her. When John meets Judy later, and “remakes” her in the likeness of Madeleine, it is clear that men are still in charge. Each time she argues about clothing, he overrules her, and the ladies at the store do not even question who they should be listening to. We know he’s paying, but it is still reflective of being in a man’s world. The woman is being looked at in this move, and the men are doing the looking. The film shows that the power is with the man.
The film meticulously depicts mannerism and masculinity as supreme power with good flow and well directed story and casting making it look apt.
The story focusses on mainline stereotypical attitudes and perceptions regarding womanhood and what has been prevalent so far in today's world and makes an attempt to showcase different challenges faced with fine gripping story and punching crisp dialogues.
However all in all movie fails to attract masses as it is more inclined towards certain set of audiences in metropolitan cities and lacks feminine user base, thanks to its storytelling.
