How has stay at home dads redefined manhood?
In the recent recession that took place nearly a decade ago, a lot of men lost their jobs. This had seen the rise of stay-at-home dad. However, with the recession over, not all of them have returned to the workforce.
Stay-at-home dads were often seen as a failure several decades ago. In the recent times, many men are choosing to stay at home rather than joining the workforce. This helps them in connecting with their children, their spouses and also be more involved in the family. Once upon a time, this was seen as a feminine job but nowadays it is not.
As times and generation changes, the definition of a particular situation also changes. That is exactly what has happened with manhood. Earlier it was the image of bodily strength and breadwinner status of the family. Nowadays the breadwinner status is often with the wife or the woman. This does not however has reduced the manhood status of the husbands or male partners. People are accepting this change as the society becomes more tolerable and open to new ideas.
How do we handle the non traditional family such as 2 dads or 2 moms? This might not be what we believe to be a traditional family, or it could be against our personal beliefs, so we have to make sure that we are not passing judgement. How can we do this as nurses?
