Explain the importance of scope management and how it was handled in the context of your chosen project ....... 1: My project choice is: The Manhattan Project The Manhattan Project was a research and development undertaking during World War II that produced the first nuclear weapons. It was led by the United States with the support of the United Kingdom and Canada. • Start date: 1939 • Completed: December 31, 1946 • Period: 1939 – 1946 • Location: Oak Ridge, TN • Garrison/HQ: Oak Ridge, Tennessee, U.S
Final Project- The Manhattan Project
Vision of The Manhattan Project- The vision of the project is to research, develop and test nuclear weapons (atomic bomb) of the future in order to bring international peace.
Importance of scope management- Scope management plays an important role in project management. The project’s scope is accurately defined. The project managers use the appropriate resources such as labor and cost to complete the project successfully. The project scope defines all the work required to complete the project. It includes only the work required and the scope is mainly involved in identifying what is involved in the activities and what is not. It helps to control the activities of the project to achieve success in the project. It is important that there is no scope creep in projects.
Scope management in The Manhattan Project- The project scope is to research and develop atomic bomb with resources: Uranium – 235/Plutonium, scientists’ knowledge and appropriate packaging. The atomic bomb should provide huge amount of chain reaction. Scientists Robert Oppenheimer, Albert Einstein and Enrico Fermi were involved in the research and development of atomic bombs. Resources such as investments and laboratories and sites at the Oak Ridge and Hanford Laboratories were used. Another site at Los Alamos, NM was also used for testing the atomic bomb. Results- The two atomic bomb ‘Little boy’ and ‘Fat Man’ were developed and tested.
Scope management played an integral role in The Manhattan Project in order to develop the atomic bomb for Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The scope ensured that there are no deviations in the activities performed. The resources and materials were as per the guidelines mentioned in the scope of the project. It also included the names of the scientists who performed the research to develop atomic bombs. The scope was a highly confidential document as it was a secret war initiative in those times.
