Would a reduction in intracellular calcium ions within the sarcolplamic reticulum of heart cells (those in the conduction pathway and the contractile cells) lead to a positive or negative chronotropic effect, inotropic effect and lusitropic effect? Explain your answer. (4.5 marks)

Answer :)

Due to decreased calcium ions inside the cells, negative chronotropic, negative inotropic, and positive lusitropic effects occur in the heart. The negative chronotropic occurs because low calcium ions weaken the rate of heart rate via decreasing the electrical conductance by ectopic pacemakers. The negative inotropic is caused because of weak strength of muscular contraction. Therefore, muscles of the heart get more time to relax and hence they get positive lusitropy.
