A spaceship is designed to support animal life for a multiyear voyage to the outer planets of the solar system. Plants will be grown to provide oxygen and to recycle carbon dioxide. If the power fails and the lights go out, CO2 levels will…

A. rise as a result of both animal and plant respiration.

B. rise as a result of animal respiration only.

C. remain unchanged because plants will continue to fix CO₂ in the dark.

D. fall because plants will increase CO₂ fixation to compensate for the lack of light reactions.

E. fall because plants will cease to respire in the dark.

Answer #1

Right answer is A.

Because the plant utilise photosynthesis in the presence of sunlight. In the process of photosynthesis, the plant releases Oxygen and utilise carbon dioxide.

Where as in respiration, the plant as well as animal utilise oxygen and releases carbon dioxide. The respiration is independent of the light.

Now, the power fails. It means that light is not present. In this case, the plant is not able to carry out photosynthesis. That's why oxygen is not produced by the plant. But plant and animal both respire. They release carbon dioxide. And there is found increase in level of carbon dioxide.

Why not D?

Because plant respires independent of light.

    10. Write a one-page summary of the attached paper? INTRODUCTION Many problems can develop in activated sludge operation that adversely affect effluent quality with origins in the engineering, hydraulic and microbiological components of the process. The real "heart" of the activated sludge system is the development and maintenance of a mixed microbial culture (activated sludge) that treats wastewater and which can be managed. One definition of a wastewater treatment plant operator is a "bug farmer", one who controls the aeration...
