-During exercise tidal volume (lung volume representing the normal volume of air displaced between normal inhalation and exhalation when extra effort is not applied)increases as the depth of breathing increases and the rate of breathing increases too. This has the effect of taking more oxygen into the body and removing more carbon dioxide lung capacity can be controlled and improved by 5 to 15 percent through aerobic workouts or exercise.
Large tidal volume would have efficient gas exchange because the ratio of dead space to tidal volume would be low. The larger the inspiratory lung volume, however, the greater becomes the elastic recoil of the lung.
Increased Tidal Volume (TV) – More air is inhaled/exhaled per breath during exercise.
Higher Inspiratory Reserve Volume (IRV) – Lungs can take in deeper breaths when needed.
Decreased Expiratory Reserve Volume (ERV) – More air is forcefully exhaled to clear the lungs.
Increased Vital Capacity (VC) – Maximum air expelled after a deep breath improves.
Unchanged Residual Volume (RV) – Air remaining in lungs after full exhalation stays the same.
Enhanced Oxygen Uptake: Deeper breaths increase alveolar ventilation, improving O₂ diffusion into blood.
Efficient CO₂ Removal: Faster, stronger exhalations expel more CO₂, maintaining pH balance.
Matching Metabolic Demand: Higher ventilation rates ensure O₂ supply and CO₂ removal keep pace with increased muscle activity.
Exercise optimizes lung function to support higher metabolic needs by maximizing gas exchange efficiency
