This is in reference to my early 20s when I became part of a youth organisation and was influenced by a set of people who were my group members and organisation leaders. The group socialisation influenced me and contributed to my growth in terms of habits, attitudes, values and belief system.

It impacted me as I started to follow a healthy lifestyle, my attitude in life became very positive as the group focused more on acquiring life skills and hustle than formal education, it made realise the importance of how most of the skills are learnt through learning and practise. The group help me develop a value system which followed ethics and supported equality. Since the group was from diverse backgrounds and cultures it made me sensitive to such diversity and understand each other viewpoints. It helped me become more emotionally intelligent.

As much as I gained valued I also contributed to the group in terms of influencing their habits and hobbies. I brought the sports culture to teams and contributed to their understanding of music and arts. Because of my travel experience in fifteen countries, I could share my experiences and helping them understand what global citizenship means. With my failures, I could influence their attitude in life to face challenges.

Here are some of the key strategies that managers, existing team members and new team members can use:

  • Managers can leverage from group socialisation as it adds to the workplace culture and knowledge upgradation. Employees share inputs and viewpoints which otherwise gets missed in a formal setup.
  • It also allows managers to train, mentor and lead the group better. It helps to understand the group dynamics better.
  • For existing team members it helps to encourage mutual support, coordination and teamwork.
  • For new members, it offers great opportunity to break the ice, understand the organisation and its culture better and build alliances and network in the group.
