Answer #1

Since, lactose intolerance is inherited through recessive allele it will express only in homozygous recessive condition. Here, the wife's mom and husband's dad are lactose intolerant it means the wifes's mom genotype is (XiXi) and husband's dad genotype is XiY. Therefore wife's genotype will be XiX and Husband's genotype will be XY (since both can digest lactose).

Now the gamete produced by wife are Xi and X and the gamete produced by huaband are X and Y.

Thus, the progeny produced will be XiX, XiY, XX and XY. Thus, if the child is male then there is 50% probability and if the child is female then the probability is 0%.

If both husband and wife are known to be heterozygous for the autosomal recessive condition of albinism, what is the probability that among their four children, three will be normal and one will have albinism? I know that each child has a 3/4 probability of being normal and 1/4 probability of having albinism. So is the answer 3/4 * 3/4 * 3/4 * 1/4? Or do you just do 3/4 * 3/4 * 3/4?

Phenylketonuria is an inherited disease caused by a recessive allele. People with PKU can't break down the amino acid phenylalanine properly; this compound and a byproduct can accumulate in the blood to toxic levels, causing mental retardation. A man and a woman are both normal, but they are carriers of the disease.    A) If they have children together, what proportion of the kids would be expected to have PKU? B) What proportion of their children would be normal?

(b) Find: i. the mean (expected) number of children with blue eyes, ii. the variance and standard deviation.
