As we know, production of gametes is carried out by process called meiosis. In this process, haploid gametes are produced. Crossing over occurs during meiosis. This crossing over results in production of recombinants. The choromosomes involved in crossing over exchanges some of their fargments.
Therefore, a child can have a different genetic makeup than either parent because the crossing over during meiosis created a recombinant.
