In relation to the operations management coursework, the task of job shadowing for a week was undertaken with an operations manager of a reputed company. The important reflections of job shadowing include understanding the work conditions in real-time. As a student, ID card was given to log in to the office and this practice reflected on the work timings of the company based on the employee logins into the office. A seat was given to me to observe the operations manager activities in getting a real experience of the actual workplace along with the other employees. The dynamics of the workplace and the nature of reporting of each employee to the operations manager were clearly understood
The procedure to get an appointment with the operations manager to interact and clarify the doubts gave a real-time experience of an employee in an organization. Personally, the job shadow experience gave a real-time experience of working in an organization along with the other employees
Academically, the student prepared well-structured questions to ask the operations manager while interviewing. These questions and the answers formed the gist of the report to be submitted to the college after the job shadowing exercise. The interview questions and answers were modified according to the academic reporting standards complying with the guideline to prepare a formal report and submit to the professor for review
Professionally, the student gets an exposure to the nature and work environment of the operations manager of a company. In the future, the student was able to get a real-time exposure of the various job responsibilities and roles of an operations manager and able to link the academic theory detailing the operations manager roles and responsibilities with the real work of the operations manager in the company. This job shadow exercise helped the student develop the theory into practice through academic-institution network
